Need money for college? Scholarship applications are open!

The Mensa Foundation Scholarship Season has begun!  If you are looking for some extra cash for college, or know a college-bound student who could use a financial boost, pay attention! The Mensa Foundation Scholarship Program awards more than $175,000 in scholarships annually and is now open for Mensans, dependents and friends.

That’ right… Mensa membership is not necessary, nor are there age or GPA requirements. We only require a well-crafted 550 word essay (please keep in mind grammar and spelling are important).  The application deadline is January 15th, 2023.  Please refer to the links below for more information and to submit your application.

Summer Volunteer Opportunity!

The Humane Rescue Alliance is a DC non-profit that is dedicated to ensuring the safety and welfare of all animals, in addition to bringing people and animals together. Every month, they help 400 animals meet their forever family, they spay and neuter 565 animals, their field officers answer 1,600 calls for help, and they benefit from 2,400 hours of volunteer work. See more about their mission by visiting their website.

Metropolitan Washington Mensa is hosting a “Helping Hands Pet Pantry Packaging Party” (that was a tongue-twister!) on Saturday, July 16th: we’ll be purchasing bulk pet food and dividing it up to stock HRA’s pantry. We would be happy to accept:

  • Paypal donations to treasurer@mwm.us.mensa.org (please leave a comment so we know what this is for and please “Send to a Friend/Family” to avoid fees) or a mailed cheque to our Treasurer (made out to Metropolitan Washington Mensa and sent to: PO Box 230455, Centreville VA 20120)
  • Donations of unopened dry food (no prescription, low-calorie, weight management or expired foods please) – please contact Tabby Vos (tabbcat@yahoo.com) for drop-off address.
  • Your time on July 16th to help separate the food into smaller bags (detailed information from the host is in the June and July Cap-M newsletters).

For the kittens! For the puppies!

On behalf of our MWM Scholarship Chair, Rachael Sampson, we would also like to take this opportunity to ask for your help in spreading the word about our scholarship opportunities.  If you know anyone who qualifies, please do not hesitate to let them know! Additionally, if you know anyone who works with young adults (teacher, guidance counselor, social worker, pastor, etc.) please let them know of this opportunity to help spread the word.  Thanks in advance for your assistance!

We Won the Diamond Award!

The Diamond Award is the highest level in Mensa’s annual Jewel Awards! The Jewel awards recognize “local groups’ membership-related activities and their active participation in all that Mensa has to offer,” according to immediate past National Chair LaRae Bakerink.

A hearty CONGRATULATIONS is due for our entire chapter and especially anyone contributing to MWM leadership! Metropolitan Washington Mensa has won the Diamond award among all Class 1 chapters (those with more than 1,100 members) in the annual Mensa Jewel Awards, announced in September.

The jewel awards recognize “local groups’ membership-related activities and their active participation in all that Mensa has to offer,” according to immediate past National Chair LaRae Bakerink.

A round of applause is also due to several MWM members who took home individual awards, including

  • Tabby Vos, National Service Award
  • Lowell Aplebaum, National Certificate of Appreciation
  • Jason Seiler, Chairman’s Service Award
